Jiu-jitsu was originally created in India more than 4,000 years ago as a self-defense technique by and for monks, and having reached Japan it was adopted by the great Samurai warriors as their own secret art. Eventually, it became the father of manyi Japanese martial arts, including judo and aikido, and came to influence karate andother styles around the world. Jiu-jitsu utilizes techniques of strikes, holds, locks, chokes, throws, and evasions, and employs mechanics thorough leverage and knowledge of human anatomy to overcome any attacker, with minimal effort and strength. It teaches self-confidence, imporoves self-esteem, releives stress, and increases the ability to focus.

Developed by the renowned Gracie family, Brazilian jiu-jitsu varies from traditional jiu-jitsu in that it was created in a different environment as a response to dealing with stronger and heavier fighters. This led to the creation of additional techniques more suited to ground fighting, such as the application of leverage, and also several types of locks. Today, BJJ is famous for its excellent groundwork, proficient competitors, and high-level tournaments, as well as for its tactical thinking and maneuvers.

Fabio Gurgel began practicing jiu-jitsu at age thirteen and received his black belt at nineteen from his master, Romero Cavalcanti 'Jacare' (alligator), who had trained with the acclaimed Rolls Gracie. Along with his master he is co-founder of the two-time World Champion Alliance Team with forty academies around the world, and continues to teach at his own academy in Sao Paulo. The author is President of the Professional League of Jiu-Jitsu, based in Brazil.

There he met and soon won the friendship of Gstao Gracie, an dinfluential local politacioan who helped himin his new country. As recognitiion of Gastao's assistance, Maeda unfolded the secrets of jiu-jitsu to Gracie's son, Carlos, who taught his brothers Jorge, Oswaldo, Gasao, and Helio.
