"Hall grew up in a small New Hampshire community surrounded by a sense of belonging. However, when she became pregnant at sixteen, those who kept her safe turned their backs. She was expelled from school, and her mother told her, “You can’t stay here.” Her father and stepmother reluctantly offered her a cold refuge until the birth of the baby that she gave up for adoption. Then she was banned from her father’s home forever. For the next decade she wandered lost, until slowly she began putting her life back together. Then at the age of 44 she graduated from Bowdoin College. She now teaches writing at UNH and has been winning many awards for her own writing." (christiguc)
