Mary Hamman was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of a physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She moved to New York City during the Prohibition era. With Mary Letherbee, movie editor, and Sally Kirkland, fashion editor, she led the "back of the book" at Life Magazine. She also worked as an editor for Pictorial Review, Good Housekeeping, Mademoiselle, and Bride & Home. She edited The Mademoiselle Handbook: for the Girl with a Job and a Future (1946), as well as the Picture Cookbook (1958).
