Blaine Harden - The Great Leader and the Fighter Pilot: The True Story of the Tyrant Who Created North Korea and The Young Lieutenant Who Stole
In his second foray into the shadowy world of North Korea, Harden
, who told the gripping story of a political prisoner’s bid for freedom in Escape from Camp 14
, examines Kim Il Sung’s rise to power in the dual context of the support of Mao and Stalin and the defiance of No Kum Sok, a young pilot who, in 1953, risked everything by stealing a Soviet MIG-15 and flying it to South Korea to hand over to the Americans. Harden will be in conversation with Kenneth H. Rowe, formerly a lieutenant of the North Korean Air Force, known as No Kum Sok before he defected. (Viking)

discusses Africa: Dispatches from a Fragile Continent
Blaine Harden spoke of his four year tenure as Washington Post sub-Saharan bureau chief, which is the basis for his book, Africa: Dispatches from a Fragile Continent. The book's format focuses on individual people and their life experiences in different African nations, including Zaire, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan and Nigeria. Mr. Harden described Africa as being "a painful part of the world for Westerners to come to grips with." He contended that Westerners "weep for it more out of pity than understanding." The book's purpose is to give the problems of Africa a human face that will bring Westerners a better understanding of what it means to be African. (timspalding)… (more)
