As the person who brings the main female and male characters together, Maiden Hong becomes famous and popular because of her wit and bravery. In the following time of West Chamber, her name becomes a designated name for an industry or a kind of people that go in for making matches for young couples.
In the story of West Chamber, Maiden Hong is an essential role to develop the story and finally push it to the happy ending. She helps to let Cui yingying and Zhang Junrui communicate with each other and arrange Cui Yingying to meet Zhang secretly. In many people’ eyes, without her selfless help, Cui yingying and Zhang can not be together in the end.
But in my opinion, even though I can not deny that she is clever and brave, maybe she is not that selfless and kind. In fact, at the beginning, Maiden Hong is sent to company and keep watch on Cui Yingying under the arrangement of Madam Cui. However, maybe it’s the reason that they are both girls in similar ages. They have similar feelings and similar thoughts. So there is a temporary relationship to share each other’s feelings and girls’ secrets. In the process of helping Cui Yingying, she is also completing her dreamy love story, even if the main role is not she.
What can pay back to her efforts may be more than that. In that time and that situation, Maiden Hong is the maid servant of Miss Cui. She has no right to choose who she can marry.
