I’m not a gun nut, but I know that hiding behind a couch doesn’t protect you from bullets. The clunky method of handling ‘nanite swarms’ bogged down the fight scene.
The whole thing reads a little awkward. The prose is good, it just feels like it’s either message fiction or trying to use message fiction to make a different point.
10 billion people would only be a lot if they were all in the US. It wouldn’t require mega scrapers to block all sunlight.
