CAPTAIN PETER A. HUCHTHAUSEN, U.S. NAVY (RET.), author and historian, lately of Kennebunk and Frye Island, Maine, died at his B&B in Amfreville, France on July 11, 2008. Son of the late Chaplain (Colonel) and Mrs. Walther A. Huchthausen, Peter graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1957 and from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1962. He served abroad destroyers USS Blandy, USS Orleck and on the USS Enterprise. As an attache, Peter served in Yugoslavia and Romania, and in Moscow just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was a recognized expert on the Soviet navy.  After retirement, Peter began a prolific writing career. Besides numerous articles, his nine books include; Echoes of the Mekong (1996), Hostile Waters with Igor Kurdin (1997), K -19, Widowmaker (2002). Frye Island; Maine's Newest Town (1998), October Fury (2002); Finding God in the Shadows with Marsha Hansen (2008), and Hide and Seek with Alexander Shelden du Plaix (2009).  Peter is survived by his daughter, Donna Davis (Colin), grandchildren, Ewan and Blake of Perth, W. Australia; son Paul Huchthausen (Dana), grandchildren, Bailey Anne and Nicholas of Gum Spring, VA; sisters Christa Mueller (Fritz) of Williamsburg, VA, Ann Ekman (Mike) of Waynesboro, VA; and former wife and friend, Kathleen Huchthausen of Kennebunk and Frye Island, ME.
