Like a sandwich with the finest meats, cheeses, and spread, on moldy, stale bread. Started off boring and childish, picked up steam and had me on ghe edge of my seat, and then had the laziest of endings.

In a small coastal town, a young girl lives as an outcast thinking she is a mermaid. She spends her days working as an occasional hotel maid and a sardine factory worker. Her love interest is a war veteran who doesn't seem very interested in her.

The Seas is a rare piece of fiction in American literature. It reads very familiar and European to me in its sensibilities and style. The genre boundaries are blurred, or, to be specific, magical realism is more experimental and in service of the text than an actual genre I would put this in.

This was a fresh and dark text, very emotional, but it avoided the trap of being sentimental. I loved how Hunt plays with words and text in general. As is expected with texts like this, it is a little bit pretentious at times.

I will write more later, but for now, this book is exquisite in its beautiful broken melancholy and bittersweet sad girl apotheosis.

This was a fun, quirky, sometimes confusing, rather dark little book. I enjoyed the narrative structure and found the characters well-developed and interesting. "Gothic" is certainly an apt description. I would also add spooky and surreal. Carl Bell was my favorite character.
