Jayadeva was a Sanskrit poet, who lived in what is now Orissa, circa 1200 AD. He is most known for his composition, the epic poem Gita Govinda, which depicts the divine love of the Hindu deity Krishna and his consort, Radha, and is considered an important text in the Bhakti movement of Hinduism. He was born to an Utkala Brahmin family in a village called Kenduli Sasan in Orissa.

I read Barbara Stoler Miller's introduction and translation of this Beautiful Hindu love poem about the love of Krishna and Radha "Gitagovinda". In the earlier poems, I thought that they were over-translated to the extent that epithets of Krishna are fully translated into English phrases. Later, epithets remains in Sanskrit. The introduction is very interesting but highly technical in places.

A note on editions: the preface states "Documentation of my critical study of the Gitagovinda is presented with the edited Sanskrit text, only in the hardcover edition of this book." The edition I read is a paperback reprint by Motilal Barnarsidass ISBN 81-208-0367-1 which does include the Sanskrit text and the extensive research notes.… (more)
