About the Author

Kevin Jefferys sets policy towards sport within the evolving sociopolitical context of post-war Britain and balances an appreciation of continuity and change from the 'austerity Games' of 1948 through to the multi-billion pound extravaganza of the London 2013 Olympics. Ideal for students, show more historians, social scientists and sport enthusiasts alike, Sport and Politics in Modern Britain provides the fullest assessment yet of this important topic, bringing sport sharply into focus as a contested domain in public and political debate. Kevin Jefferys is Professor of Contemporary History at Plymouth University. His previous publications include works of political history such as Retreat from New Jerusalem: British Politics, 1951-1964 (also in the British Studies series). Jefferys selected key moments in British history from the selection of Churchill as Prime Minister in1940 to the emergence of Tony Blair and the New Labour in 1994. Other crises selected include the Suez crisis in 1956, the Profumo Affair in 1963, the Falkland War, Margaret Thatcher's downfall and the end of Clement Atlee's government in 1951. Most centre around the Prime Minister at the time and how he or she handled the issue.

I am very much interested in politics, history and current affairs but am too young, in my late 20s, to remember many of the seminal events in British history since WWII. This book provided me with an excellent account of issues like the Suez crisis and the winter of discontent, many of which still have an impact on thinking and decision making today. Unsure about what 'black Wednesday' or the 'Profumo affair' were really all about? Here's your chance to find out
The author's style is very engaging and the topics are covered in sufficient detail to present a comprehensive overview without getting bogged down in superfluous minutia.
Highly recommended.
