William D. Jenkins; Expert on Joyce and Doyle, 77. William D. Jenkins, an expert on James Joyce and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, died on Oct. 4, 1993 at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He was 77 and lived in Manhattan. He died of heart failure, the family said. Mr. Jenkins wrote on a wide range of 19th- and 20th-century literary subjects. His final work, to be published next year, was "The Adventure of the Detected Detective: Sherlock Holmes in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake." During World War II, Mr. Jenkins flew on 50 combat missions, serving as a bombardier in the air raid on the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. Before the war, he served with the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and a son, Steven, both of Manhattan.
