Celebrating Matthew Henson, Hero of Arctic Exploration
Storytime & Craft with Christy Woster.
February 21, Saturday, 10:30am Many of us have heard of Robert E. Peary, an explorer whose accomplishments included reaching the North Pole in 1909. Fewer of us have heard of African-American Matthew Henson, who was also a member of the team that reached the North Pole and who made essential contributions to the success of the expedition. Storyteller Christy Woster, whose fascination with this Arctic expedition led to her research and her collection of antiquarian books and artifacts about the Arctic, celebrates the amazing life of Matthew Henson during this 100th anniversary year of the historic expedition. Christy’s interactive presentation this morning will feature the book Onward: A Photobiography of African-American Polar Explorer Matthew Henson will also include a fun Arctic-related craft and information about the great challenges that Henson and Peary encountered in their quest. You’ll learn that Henson’s challenges were even more difficult after he returned to America. Discover how he faced the challenge of discrimination and found his rightful place in history. Minnesotan Christy Woster is an avid reader, collector, and history buff. (booksense)
