Joyful Strains, as the title suggests, is a new anthology exploring the sometimes bitter sweet experiences of new migrants to Australia. From the relief of being welcomed to a new homeland, to struggling to find their feet in the ‘lucky country’, contributors Arnold Zable (Greece), Shalini Akhil (Fiji) and Danny Katz (Canada) reflect on this fascinating collection, and their own personal experiences, of making the journey to Australia.
Danny Katz, Canadian-born, came to Australia at a young age. After failed careers as a musician, stand-up comedian and car washer, he finally turned to writing and became a newspaper columnist for the Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Western Australian.
Arnold Zable is a writer, novelist and human rights advocate, and one of Australia’s most-loved storytellers.
Shalini Akhil’s first novel, The Bollywood Beauty, was published in 2005. She has been shortlisted in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards and made it through to a Raw Comedy National Grand Final. (rodneyvc)
