Holocaust survivor - Short biography
- Etunia Bauer Katz was born to a close-knit Jewish family in the resort-like town of Buczacz, Poland (present day Buchach, Ukraine). Her comfortable life was shattered when Nazi Germany invaded her homeland during World War II and entered her town in July 1941. Her twin brother Monio was shot in a massacre of hundreds of Jewish men. Etunia, her father, and other siblings fled into the forest and spent the ensuing years hiding in barns, chicken coops, grain fields, and abandoned huts. In 1944, they were cornered and gunned down by Germans; Etunia managed to escape. She hid alone for weeks in a crawl space over the verandah in her old home until the arrival of the Red Army. A year later, she met her future husband, Julian Katz. They emigrated to the USA. Her memoir, Our Tomorrows Never Came, was published in 2000.
