Hij brak internationaal door met zijn eerste drie zeer goed gedocumenteerde thrillers met Bernie Gunther in de hoofdrol onder de titel Berlijnse trilogie. Daarna verschenen De een van de ander, Een stille vlam en Als de doden niet herrijzen, die met prijzen en lof werden overladen. Zijn nieuwste boek heet Grijs verleden. I.s.m.
