Basant is a spring kite festival in Northern India and Pakistan; the best kite fighter is declared the king of Basant. In Christiane Kromer’s picture book King for a Day, set in contemporary Pakistan, readers experience the centuries-old festival and the traditional sport of kite fighting through the eyes of Malik, a spirited, determined young boy who masters the sport while finding his own way to face and overcome life's challenges. Christiane presents her book at Greenlight’s Story Time. Then, everyone is invited to Fort Greene Park, where (weather permitting) kite master Ayub Sidiqqui of Pakistani Kites will demonstrate the tradition of Pakistani kite flying! Join us to celebrate the beginning of spring with kites! Ages 5 to 12.
