Short biography
The daughter of a publisher, Marianne Langewiesche moved to Munich as a child and completed her education there. She became a social worker and journalist. In 1935, she married Heinz Coubier, a playwright. Although her husband was banned from writing by the Nazis, Marianne published her first book, an historical novel, in 1938. In the 1950s, she traveled worldwide and turned from fiction to nonfiction. Her radio broadcasts about her travels helped make her famous in her native Bavaria.
