Teacher Workshop - Middle Grade
Harleysville Books, Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 6pm
It's time to get ready for a new school year and this year's workshops will introduce you to authors we love.
Our first author, Laurel Snyder, is the author of most recent novel BIGGER THAN BREAD BOX. Laurel Snyder is the author of three novels for children, “Penny Dreadful,” “Any Which Wall” and “Up and Down the Scratchy Mountains OR The Search for a Suitable Princess” (Random House) and two picture books, “Inside the Slidy Diner” and “Baxter the Kosher Pig.” (Tricycle).
In addition to her books for children, Laurel has written two books of poems, “Daphne & Jim: a choose-your-own-adventure biography in verse” (Burnside Review Press, 2005) and “The Myth of the Simple Machines” (No Tell Books, 2007). She also edited an anthology of nonfiction, “Half/Life: Jew-ish tales from Interfaith Homes” (Soft Skull Press, 2006) A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a former Michener-Engle Fellow, Laurel has published work in the Utne Reader, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Revealer, Salon, The Iowa Review, American Letters and Commentary, and elsewhere. She is an occasional commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered, but most of all, she is a mom. Our second authors and illustrators are Husband and wife, Robert and Lisa Papp, both enjoyed drawing when they were children. Robert – images of superheroes, Lisa – her favorite stuffed animals. These days, Robert has given up his crayons for oil paint while Lisa prefers watercolor. Both artists work from reference as well as their imagination. Lisa’s mom is a talented seamstress and makes most of the costumes that end up in the pages and on the covers of the books they illustrate. P Is for Princess: A Royal alphabet, is the first book they co-illustrated as a team and The Town that Fooled the British is their first project as author and illustrator. “We feel lucky to be in a business that lets us fool around with paint and be creative – and the best thing is, we get to do it together.” Rob and Lisa's newest collaboration is The Town that Fooled the British.
