- Personnage à part et véritable légende dès son vivant, Huddie Ledbetter, dit Leadbelly, naquit en Louisiane en 1889. L’instrument de son enfance est l’accordéon diatonique utilisé par les cajuns, puis il adopte la guitare à 12 cordes. Il commence très tôt à voyager et rencontre en 1916 Blind Lemon Jefferson à Dallas. Ils s’associent, mais en 1918 Leadbelly effectue le premier d’une longue série de séjours dans les prisons et pénitenciers du Sud. Jusqu’à sa découverte par le folkloriste John Lomax en 1933 il aura connu la vie itinérante avec toutes les péripéties que cela comporte. Ainsi la quantité considérable de chansons folkloriques, souvent très anciennes, qu’il aura amassé dégagent un parfum de vécu incontestable.
