William R. Le Fanu served for nearly 40 years as medical historian and librarian of the Royal College of Surgeons in London and wrote several books. He also edited the 1960 edition of the journal of his forebearer Elizabeth "Betsy" Sheridan Le Fanu, the sister of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. In 1930, he married the composer Elizabeth (later Dame Elizabeth) Maconchy and had two daughters, one of whom is the composer Nicola LeFanu.
