Grace Denio Litchfield was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent much of her early life in Europe. Her first book, Only an Incident, was published in 1883, although she had begun writing much earlier. In the Crucible, her account of an earthquake on the French Riviera, appeared in 1897. Her poems and stories were published in many popular national magazines of that era, including Harper's and the Atlantic. After returning to the USA, she lived in Washington D.C., with a summer home on Lake Minnewaska in Central New York.
