Short biography
Emma Jane Wotton DeLong was the French-American daughter of a shipping magnate. At about age 19, she married the U.S. Navy officer and explorer Lt. Commander George Washington DeLong, leader of the epic Jeannette expedition to the Arctic in 1879-82. The ship became trapped in the ice and eventually was crushed and sank. She edited her husband’s memoirs in 1883 as The Voyage of the Jeannette, and wrote her own autobiography, Explorer’s Wife (1938).
