This is a story about a woman, Destiny, who has convinced herself she is happy with her life, doesn't need her absent-for-two-decades father, and is content with her solitary life and work, other than her friends.

The author paints a small town we all want to live in, and this town has been Destiny's family and support system. Everything changes when her dad shows up on her doorstep...with more family surprises than Destiny never imagined.

It's a great story of opening your heart to forgiveness, welcoming new relationships, and understanding the actions of others.… (more)

When I first started this book I thought "Oh, this is a romance novel". It isn't (well, I guess it is in a way) but it is so much more. Abby, the main character, seems to have her life planned out until her fiance, Fred, sneaks off to Paris.

What I liked about this story is it didn't take the easy way out. She didn't fall into her old neighbor Mick's arms and let him sweep her away. She made some tough decisions for herself, took a good look at her life, and changed it...along with her perspective of what she thought would make her happy.

The family dynamics in the story are fun, and the underlying message is great. It's a quick, fun, read that will make you take a look at your own decisions in life!

When a Stranger Calls
3 Stars

17 years following the murder of her mother, Lindsey Tarlington is secure in the knowledge that the man responsible died in prison. But now, Lindsey has begun receiving mementos - a driver's license, a ring, an ornament - all in her mother' possession at the time of her death. With no one else to turn to, Lindsey seeks help from the one man she shouldn't, Matt Alessandro, whose father was convicted of killing Camille Tarlington. Can she trust him with her life and her heart?

A good premise with a satisfying romance overall. Nevertheless, the mystery is underdeveloped and predictable, probably due to the short category format.

Matt and Lindsey's relationship starts out strained, but they grow closer as they work together to uncover the truth. Although their chemistry is good, the emotions underlying their sexual tension feel forced rather than natural. Lindsey, in particular, is annoying at times as she struggles with her attraction to Matt and her belief that his father killed her mother. This causes her to run too hot and cold.

All in all, a quick read for a hot summer day.

Normally I don't choose Chick Lit or Contemporary Romance, but this book filled a prompt for one of my reading challanges. I enjoyed the story, even though it was quite sad in places. But each step along the way, it had a message that resonated with me. So now, I choose to sing me a rainbow. (I will add a Kleenex warning here. Not quite an ugly cry, but tissues necessary.)
