Seán MacBride (1904-1988) was a French born Irish and international politician. He fought in the Irish War of Independence and in the Civil War, on the Republican side. His father, Major John MacBride, who had fought in the Boer War with the Boers, was executed by the British Army during the Easter Rising. A barrister, he was also Chief-of-Staff of the IRA for a time. He was subsequently the leader of the Clann na Poblachta party and became the Minister for Foreign Affairs. After leaving politics he was a founder member of Amnesty International and later was awarded both the Nobel Peace Prize and the Lenin Peace Prizes.
