- Alicia Catherine Mant was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England, the youngest of nine children of Rev. (later Bishop) Richard Mant, the rector of All Saints Church, and his wife Elizabeth Roe Mant. At age 47, Alicia married Rev James Russell Phillott, 14 years her junior; the couple had no children. Alicia wrote stories and novels aimed mainly at children, including The Cottage in the Chalk-Pit, first published in 1822 in London.
