Social Psychology, 10E by Saul M. Kassin was probably one of the better text books I have read. First and foremost it did an excellent job of explaining concepts in ways that were easy to grasp. In fact there were several different concepts discussed in this book that I have learned about multiple times throughout the years and yet it wasn't until reading about them again in this book that I really felt like I gained a full understanding of them.

Second, it had lots and lots of studies and research cited throughout and wonderful info graphic depictions of the information from these studies. These were some of the easiest to read graphs, depicting very intriguing information.

Finally, I loved how much focus was placed on bringing in a multicultural aspect to every single chapter instead of just making a standalone chapter to discuss the multicultural aspects in social psychology. And extending from this point, I also loved how not only were very important and classic research and experiments discussed, but a lot of new and timely information as well.

This book is amazing! Not the content that is.Since it's the newest edition, I received it brand new and I am still excited that I got to rent a new hardcover textbook for half it's price. The content of the book is readable.

Parallels the MBTI theory of whether you use he thinking (T) or a feeling (F) function in your decision making processes. Thinkers tend to use a linear logical process to make decisions (although the logic might be idiosyncratic to them). Feelers tend to be very aware of the holistic impact that their decisions might create.

If this topic interest you, check out MBTI literature that further theorize human motivations and behavior along 4 dichotomous dimensions.

This book gives some interesting insights into how society shapes us into the people we are. The 8 cultural conflicts were:

1. Eastern Hemisphere vs. Western Hemisphere
2. Men vs. Women
3. White vs. Non-White
4. Rich vs. Poor
5. Christian vs. Non-Christian
6. Midwest vs. Coast (U.S. Geography)
7. Money Motivation vs. Social Motivation
8. North Hemisphere vs. South Hemisphere

I especially found the Rich vs Poor and the U.S. Geography chapters interesting, but pretty much all of the chapters were interesting. The last chapter seemed a bit weak. The book would have probably benefited by restructuring the order they discussed things in. I would highly recommend this for anyone to read! Especially if you are working with people who don't come from the same background as you do. It might just make things easier for everyone involved if people were more conscious of the differences in people's values and ways of thinking.… (more)
