Written in 1943 while the war was still uncertain, the editor compiled a cross-section of letters received from servicemen that in their simplicity tell of the goodness, bravery and patriotism of these men and women. They are letters that would uplift and give pride to the people at home. They are letters written soon after battle, letters from nurses in strange situations in North Africa, letters from men hating to tell their folks of their shell-shocked condition after Guadalcanal, letters written by men who anticipated a year's stay in hospital and letters received posthumously. A good description of the early war years by those on the front lines never intending their words to be made public.… (more)

A fine collection of Sinclair Lewis' essays and articles. Lewis was a complex and flawed creator; his writings were uneven, shot through with genius, maudlin self-pity and controversy for its own sake. The same can be said for many of his essays and articles, although all are worth reading.
