Short biography
Daphne du Maurier came from a distinguished literary and theatrical family. Her father was a famous actor-manager, her mother was an actress, and her paternal grandfather was the author and Punch cartoonist George du Maurier, who created the character of Svengali in the novel Trilby. She was also the cousin of the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired J.M. Barrie's characters in Peter Pan. She began her own literary careeer writing short stories, and her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published in 1931. It received rave reviews from critics. Her three most famous three novels, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, and Rebecca, were inspired by her love for Cornwall, where she lived and wrote. She married Frederick "Boy" Browning, a British military officer who was knighted in 1946 (making her Lady Browning) and had 3 children.
