J.K. McCarthy spent much of his life in Papua New Guinea as a pioneer patrol officer, administrator and legislator. He first went there as a field officer in 1927. He was Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees in the Papua New Guinea House of Assembly from its inauguration in 1964 to 1968. (See Who's Who in Australia 1974 and obituary notice in the Canberra Times 5/11/1976, p.9 - Copy of f. 17 file P23/3/36).
