Companion to Manhunt, with the same editor, this issue of verdict is interesting, but the stories (all reprints) fall short of the standard of Manhunt. Obviously it isn't intended for them to be the same, of course, but they are just not as memorable.

Another great issue, featuring a funny Shell Scott story (aren't they all), lots of references to pointed breasts, and the usual pointless violence. I've already forgotten if a woman gets slapped in this issue or not.

"I hit her across the face, twice, back and forth, so hard that her teeth clicked together and blood splattered on her naked breasts." That line, from a story by Charles Beckman, Jr. is pretty much the essence of Manhunt. The men, mostly private detectives are tough, and women are usually someone's pawn. Reading these stories, I don't have to like the characters, but I can't help but like the writers and their writing, which doesn't waste time and doesn't hold anything back. (I should point out that the woman in the opening quote was about to plunge a knife into the back of the private detective....… (more)

The quality of authors remains high, the brutality constant, and the sexism rampant as the toughest magazine ever continues at the crest of its greatness. Every story has attitude, and some are quite clever in addition to being hardboiled.
