Don McCullin has made a life-time study of photographing the abject misery of warfare. Witnessing conflicts around the world for more than a quarter century, McCullin has excelled at capturing the heroic as well as the chaotic within formal compositions. While the similar work of other photographers has been seen by some critics as exploiting despair, the compassion with which McCullin portrays his subjects elevates his photographs above sensationalism and journalistic convention.
