In this debut novel, the author tells the story of Erika von Kessler, an opera singer in Boston in the early 1900s, who is torn between her desire to be a mother and her desire to have a career in opera, which she loves. Erika longs to move to Italy to launch an international career, but her husband wants to start a family in the hopes of keeping their marriage together. After several years without a pregnancy, they are referred to Dr. Ravell, an obstetrician at the forefront of infertility treatments. Both husband and wife are desperate to conceive and Dr. Ravell vows to help them, but as their lives become increasingly entangled, none of them can predict the scandalous choices they will make.
