Meet Michael Mehas, author of Stolen Boy, a haunting psychological journey through the lives of teens as they battle impending adulthood. Stolen Boy is based on the true story of a kidnapping and murder of a young teen by his peers. Michael was also the associate producer of the film Alpha Dog starring Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis, and Sharon Stone. The book and movie centers around a group of young adults in the privileged neighborhoods of Southern California. They pass the time doing drugs and wasting their lives. When their hangout is vandalized by a rival, known in the novel as Mickey Youngblood, they seek revenge. Following the laws of the street, they kidnap the younger brother, Bobby Leblanc. Other than asking for ransom as payback, there is no plan in place. Bobby was taken, willingly, to different houses to drink, do drugs, and have sex with the girlfriends of his captors. He was free to go, but chose to stay. Often, parents were at home and never asked questions, choosing to ignore what was going on. Even Bobby forgot he was a hostage, until it was too late. Ordered by Youngblood, two of the men go to a remote location and execute the boy. The act was done without remorse or fear of the consequences of their actions. The book and movie are fiction. However, in real life, several of these young people from middleclass homes and dysfunctional families were arrested and tried, resulting in the death penalty of the one who pulled the trigger. However, the leader, with the improbably name of Jesse James Hollywood, fled the country and became the youngest man to ever make the FBI's Most Wanted List. Mehas, a defense attorney but not on this case, interviewed the people involved and their families in order to write book. After the capture of Hollywood in Brazil, Mehas was subpoenaed three times as a witness in the trial and forced to hand over his notes and tapes. With the death penalty as a real outcome, what Mehas knows has become extremely important in the case. The trial of Hollywood goes to court on February 9, 2009. The book, Stolen Boy has received the IPPY Gold Medal Award in Fiction from the Independent Publishers, the 2007 Book of the Year award in Fiction from Books and Authors.net, the Best New Fiction from National Best Books Awards plus numerous other awards. Meet Michael Mehas at Willow Bridge Books on Friday, February 6 at 7 p.m. and learn more about his story. Michael will personalize any book purchased at the event so come and join Michael at the bookstore. (booksense)
