Described by Kirkus as “part Bert and Ernie and part Thelma and Louise,” the beloved duo Joe and Sparky return just in time for the 2013-2014 school year in Joe and Sparky Go to School, written by Barrington resident and author Jamie Michalak. Children will roll over laughing—and find lots to relate to—in this latest installment of the award-winning series.
When a yellow bus arrives at their famous cageless zoo, fun-loving Joe Giraffe investigates. Before he and the shy Sparky Turtle know what’s happening, the two are whizzing along their way to—school! What fun! There’s lots to do and plenty to learn. Who knew that math tasted so good or that no one actually rests in the restroom? Joe and Sparky—and readers, too—get an education in this, their third, madcap adventure.
Michalak decided to write Joe and Sparky Go to School after visiting many elementary schools. “I wondered what would happen if Joe and Sparky spent the day there,” she says. She was also inspired by the S.T.A.R. incentive program at Sowams Elementary School in Barrington, Rhode Island. Students earn star stickers for good deeds.
The early reviews for Joe and Sparky Go to School are raves. In a starred review, The Horn Book praised the book as “hilarious ... Perfect for the newly independent reader and makes a fine bridge from Amelia Bedelia to Ramona.... Lively vocabulary, a large font, and carefully placed illustrations—all in a humorous, high-interest package—will make this a hit.” School Library Journal wrote, “This beginning chapter book is a lot of fun!”
Jamie Michalak is the author of more than twenty-five children’s books, including the acclaimed Joe and Sparky series and So You Want to Catch Bigfoot? She resides in Barrington, Rhode Island with her husband and two sons. For more information, visit www.jamiemichalak.com
