Gary B. Nash - Friends of Liberty: A Tale of Three Patriots, Two Revolutions, and the Betrayal that Divided a Nation

In a talk based on his recent book, Friends of liberty: A Tale of Three Patriots, Two Revolutions, and the Betrayal that Divided a Nation: Thomas Jefferson, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, and Agrippa Hull, Gary Nash will discuss Tadeusz Kosciusko.
Tadeusz Kosciuszko, celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic in the age of democratic revolutions, forged comradeships with several African Americans with unusual and under-studied results. The Polish hero’s long relationship with Agrippa Hull of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, had the potential to change the entire course of American slavery. Kosciuszko’s later friendship with the mysterious Jean Pierre is another chapter of Kosciuszko’s evolving thinking about race and democracy.
Gary B. Nash is Emeritus Professor of History at UCLA and the author of many books on colonial and Revolutionary American history.
