Short biography
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is the second largest public library in the USA behind the Library of Congress. It has branches in the boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island, and affiliations with academic and professional libraries in the New York metropolitan area and upstate. Brooklyn and Queens are each served by their own library systems. The NYPL was built in the 19th century on grass-roots libraries, social libraries of bibliophiles and collectors, and with philanthropy from wealthy New Yorkers of the era such as James Lenox, Jacob Astor, and Andrew Carnegie.
