A short history of the period between the end of World War I and Hitler's ascension to power. It focuses entirely on the political and economic factors that led to the collapse of the Weimar Republic. There is no social history.

All in all, it is fair and even-handed. Hitler is treated fairly. He is neither demonic villain, nor messianic savior. He is portrayed as a political operator, who after the failed Beer Hall Putsch, never overplayed his hand and took full advantage of the opportunities afforded him.

Nicholls does not conclude that Hitler's rise was a forgone conclusion.
