Short biography
Elizabeth Percy (née Seymour), Duchess of Northumberland and Baroness Percy, was the only daughter of General Algernon Seymour, Earl of Hertford, later 7th Duke of Somerset, and his wife Frances Thynne. When her father died in 1750 (Elizabeth's brother Lord Beauchamp having predeceased him), she inherited the estates of her Percy grandmother and became 2nd Baroness Percy in her own right. Her husband Sir Hugh Smithson was allowed to inherit the family earldom of Northumberland by special remainder -- he changed his name to Hugh Percy. Elizabeth then became a duchess in 1766 when her husband was elevated to be 1st Duke of Northumberland. She served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. She died at age 60 and was buried in the Percy family vault in St. Nicholas's chapel, Westminster, with a monument designed by Robert Adam.
