Short biography
Said Nursi was a Muslim scholar renowned for his Turkish devotional works called the Risale-i Nur. Active in Kurdish nationalist politics, he was sent to internal exile in a village, where his teachings on an Islamic response to positivist materialism drew a wide following. Granted his freedom in 1949, he supported Turkey's Democratic Party and pressed for unity among Muslims and Christians. In 1956 the government allowed his writings to be published. After his death, rightist soldiers exhumed his body and concealed it to prevent veneration of Nursi as a saint. The honorific title Bediüzzaman is translated as “wonder of the age.”
