Thursday, October 9, 4:30 pm at Manchester Elementary Middle School (map here), the Northshire Bookstore and the Vermont Humanities Council and are pleased to announce an extraordinary community event: R.J.Palacio presenting 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Book of Precepts. This event is free and open to the public. In the #1 New York Times bestselling novel Wonder readers were introduced to memorable English teacher Mr. Browne and his love of precepts. Simply put, precepts are principles to live by, and Mr. Browne has compiled 365 of them—one for each day of the year—drawn from popular songs to children’s books to inscriptions on Egyptian tombstones to fortune cookies. His selections celebrate kindness, hopefulness, the goodness of human beings, the strength of people’s hearts, and the power of people’s wills. Interspersed with the precepts are letters and emails from characters who appeared in Wonder. There’s something for everyone here, with words of wisdom from such noteworthy people as Anne Frank, Martin Luther King Jr., Confucius, Goethe, Sappho—and over 100 readers of Wonder who sent R. J. Palacio their own precepts. Ms. Palacio’s previous book, Wonder, is the 2014 pick for the Vermont Humanities Council’s Vermont Reads program. Now in its twelfth year, Vermont Reads offers communities around the state the opportunity to read a book of high quality and acclaim, bringing people together to read, discuss, and build activities around the book. Vermont Reads promotes community-building, open dialogue, intergenerational exchange, a focus on the humanities, and literacy. Wonder has drawn the largest Vermont Reads participation ever, inspiring 115 communities to host discussions, staged readings, Wonder-themed movie nights and art exhibits, community meals, and more. Two schools also chose Wonder as their theme for VHC’s summer Humanities Camps program for middle-school students.
