Naka Pillman

Innocent and artistic, the lovely young Yorika is seduced by a South African and lured from Japan to Johannesburg, where she is imprisoned in the Hillbrow flat of his mistress and used as both a skivvy and a sex slave.

Set in the 1970s during the heyday of Apartheid, Yorika – who speaks no English – is desperate, until she remembers Naka Pillman, a South African she met briefly in Tokyo, and enlists her help.

Based on a purportedly true story, the book is written with the license of a novel – albeit the kind that appears in shelves marked ‘Women’s Fiction’. Sentimental and clichéd, this none-the-less gripping story is impossible not to finish.… (more)
