Short biography
"He studied at Palermo and Florence. He taught at the Palermo Conservatory, was librarian of the S Cecilia Conservatory, Rome (1948-56), then professor at Harvard, returning to Italy in 1972 as professor at Rome University. His work, chiefly on Italian music from the 14th century to the 17th, is informed by a rare logic and clarity of thought and an unusually wide cultural knowledge, seen at their best in his Li due Orfei: da Poliziano a Monteverdi (1969)."
