Marie-Louise von Plessen was born in Neustadt, Germany to an aristocratic landowning family. Her parents were Carl Ludwig Cay, Lehensgraf von Scheel-Plessen, and his wife Anita von Scheven. The writer Elisabeth Plessen is her older sister. She grew up on the family estate at Sierhagen. She studied history, art history and sociology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and earned her Ph.D. in 1974. Since 1977, she had curated major international exhibitions and written or edited their catalogue books. She's a member of the Scientific Board at the Musée de l’Europe in Brussels and a Senator of the European Cultural Parliament.
