Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus was a pioneer in Dutch economic and social history. He wrote an authorative monograph on the history of cloth production in Leiden from the Middle Ages until 1795 and published numerous sources on the same subject and on price history. He founded the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam (www.iisg.nl).
