Ruth Elaine Painter, the daughter of a Roanoke College professor, studied literature at the college as an undergraduate and then earned a master's degree at Indiana University. In 1917, she married J.G. (James Garfield) Randall, a widower and colleage of her father's. As Ruth Painter Randall, she became the author of several books on President Lincoln's family, including Mary Lincoln: Biography of a Marriage (1953), Lincoln's Sons (1955), and The Courtship of Mr. Lincoln (1957).
