Lecture: “Language Is Not the Frosting, It’s the Cake” Tom Robbins"Legendary American novelist Tom Robbins will speak and take questions from the audience to entertain and inform, or as he likes to say "to bewilder, mystify, rankle, delude, foil, swindle and corrupt," Thursday evening, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Heckman Auditorium on Doane College's Crete campus. His talk, this year’s lecture in the Lucille Cobb Lecture Series sponsored by the English department, is entitled “Language Is Not the Frosting, It’s the Cake.” It is free and open to the public." Meet Tom Robbins author of B is for Beer Tom Robbins reads from B is for Beer. Meet Tom Robbins Thursday, April 30th at 7:30 pm in our Historic Lower Downtown store. Maverick bestselling novelist Tom Robbins will discuss and sign his new book B is for Beer ($17.95 Ecco), a children's book about beer, but also a book for adults, from the author known for his ability to both seriously illuminate and comically entertain. Once upon a time (right about now) there was a planet (how about this one?) whose inhabitants consumed thirty-six billion gallons of beer each year (it's a fact, you can Google it). Among those affected, each in his or her own way, by all the bubbles, burps, and foam, was a smart, wide-eyed, adventurous kindergartner named Gracie; her distracted mommy; her insensitive dad; her non-conformist uncle; and a magical, butt-kicking intruder from a world within our world. Populated by the aforementioned characters - and as charming as it may be subversive - B Is for Beer involves readers, young and old, in a surprising, far-reaching investigation into the limits of reality, the transformative powers of children, and, of course, the ultimate meaning of a tall, cold brewski. 275 free tickets for the event will be available Tuesday, April 21, beginning at 9:00 am, with the purchase of B is for Beer at any Tattered Cover location. Each ticket will admit one person to the event hall for the presentation and will reserve one numbered place in the signing line. Additional tickets for the booksigning line only will be available beginning at 6:30 pm on the day of the event. Those who do not get one of the first 275 tickets should still be able to hear Mr. Robbins, though not see his presentation. They will be able to get books signed. (misericordia)… (more)
