About the Author
Frank Robinson was born in Beaumont, Texas on August 31, 1935. He played baseball in high school and signed with the Cincinnati Reds' organization in 1953. He made his major league debut as Cincinnati's left fielder three years later. He hit 38 home runs that season and was named Rookie of the show more Year. In 1961, he was named Most Valuable Player for the National League. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles after the 1965 season. In 1966, Robinson was named Most Valuable Player for the American League and Most Valuable Player for the World Series. He played baseball for 21 seasons including brief stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the California Angels, and Cleveland Indians. Robinson made his debut as the majors' first black manager with the Indians on April 8, 1975. Since he was still an active player, he continued to play as a designated hitter. He managed for all or parts of 16 seasons with the Indians, the San Francisco Giants, the Orioles, the Montreal Expos, and the Washington Nationals. He was named the American League manager of the year in 1989 by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. His memoir, Extra Innings written with Berry Stainback, was published in 1988. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 for his achievements as a baseball player and manager.
