After retiring in 1974 from a successful career as Managing Director of an international commodity trading company, he made a career of writing letters to the editor. According to The Independent, hardly a day seemed to pass without his views on the monarchy, the morals of public figures or the accountability of the Intelligence Services appearing in one national newspaper or another.
