- Annie Saumont was born in Cherbourg, France, and grew up in Rouen. Her mother was a teacher. Annie learned Spanish and English and studied modern literature. She specialized in translating works from English to French, by authors such as John Fowles, J.D. Salinger, V.S. Naipaul, Nadine Gordimer, and Patricia Highsmith, among others. She then began to write her own works, including about 300 short stories published in about 30 volumes. She won numerous prestigious prizes, including the Prix Goncourt de la nouvelle for Quelquefois dans les cérémonies (Sometimes in the Ceremonies, 1981) and the Grand prix de l'Académie française for her body of work.
