Lola M. Schaefer and Wyatt Schaefer write a simple, yet elegant, biography about Marie Curie and her contributions to science in medicine through the use of radium. The photographs are copies of actual photos taken of Curie during her lifetime. Schaefer includes a time line at the bottom of every two pages. With each turn of the page, a new year is added and highlighted on the line, while the text discusses what happened during that time.
Lola M. Schaefer is a teacher who loves writing and the creativeness that can be brought to stories. I love her books. This one is no exception. This biography is a great tool to help young readers understand biographies. For older children, it gives a great taste of the person they may want to investigate or research. The book does recommend other books to further one’s reading about Curie. The use of time lines is brilliant. It’s a great tool for students to see things in chronological order. This may help students with their own organizational skills, if they were to have a writing prompt which asked them to write their own biography. For a short book, it has so much to offer!… (more)

The book first told us when Albert Einstein was born and that he was very shy and did not talk much. Then it talked a lot about his accomplishments and beliefs. He was very intelligent, and helped people understand how our universe worked.

I liked how the sentences in this book were very short and easy to understand. The time line kept everything in order. The pictures helped make Albert Einstein real. It was nice to know that he was a very shy and did not talk much, but could accomplish so much and have so many people listen to him.

Activities:
Have the children experiment with gravity by using magnets, having them turn them back to back, they can feel the magnets fighting one another, and they will not actually touch.
